Day 1: Spring Awakening

15.3 miles. Fun in the sun! (Was it fun though…? Jk it was… Most of the time). I started the pct!!! Evan and I woke up at 5:30 after a lovely Cinco de Mayo at On the Border to catch the shuttle down to Campo. We took photos at the Southern Terminus and stuck our feet and hands over the the Mexican border. The trail started off great with high spirits and a nice trail. Overall I was most shocked by how beautiful it was. All of the vegetation was in full spring bloom with beautiful colors everywhere. It was insanely hot by the middle of the day so we were constantly searching for shade (and got quickly run out by the flies swarming evan) and chilled in the tent for a few games of Rumi to try pass the worst of the sun. Evan was so sweaty that he had literal booty sweat that got all over the tent – he stanky. I had a really great feeling all day where I felt totally relaxed and ready for what lies ahead. I was really content that I was able to feel healthy and happy on the first day. The last few miles to our campsite goal at the end of the day was tiring but we made it with plenty of time to have a good convo in shade with some other hikers, have dinner, and get some stretches in. We met 2 guys (Pantry, Riddle) and a girl that had done the CDT before that I really enjoyed meeting. Pantry gave us asian mango gummies and wore a time traveler necklace even though he’s never read Harry Potter. Bad news – already have a hole in my tent (first use of duct tape woo!) and my footprint has two tears. Overall amazing first day on the trail.
