Day 43: Sierra Mist

16.7 miles. A day of relaxation after such a long day before. We woke up freezing cold due to overcast skies around 7:30 am. No one wanted to get out of their sleeping bags so we just enjoyed having a slow morning cuddled up next to each other. Eventually we got the courage to start the day but didn’t end up leaving camp until 10. What a perfect morning. One disaster struck however; as I went to the lake to get water, I saw weatherman pulling his pants back up because his bottle cap had just floated away on the lake but he didn’t have time to get in fast enough. At first we thought he could dive in after it but after my hands were bitterly cold from just filling up my bottle I was very happy he didn’t. Boogie and I made our way to the river and played the clothes game and then alchemist joined and played the wedding game. We got to the river and stopped for lunch surprised that the boys didn’t stop for us like they usually did. After almost finishing our entire lunch and getting ready to leave, they walked up. We were confused about where they had been and they said they were down the river catching fish for the past hour. We didn’t believe them at all so we asked where the fish were to which they replied in prairie dogs pocket. To our surprise, he then pulled out a bag of 6 perfectly filleted rainbow trout. We watched them cook their prized meal while boogie, alchemist, and lil drop all huddled in their sleeping bags. We had laughed earlier about how lil drop looked out of place in her nice puffy vest and sunglasses crossing the river. Eventually, weatherman led us in a meditation that was so calming it put boogie and I to sleep for what felt like 30 minutes. After a lazy and cold lunch, we decided to get up and do the last few miles to get to the Whitney junction and our campsite. Right before the junction, I saw the most amazing gate yet (once you do a thru hike you will understand the beauty and humor of the almighty gates). It was a beautifully constructed wooden gate with a sliding log bar – magnificent. The meadow was filled with marmots and deer and sights of jagged peaks, any of which could have been whitney. Once we got to camp, we heard the frigid overnight forecast and decided to change our plans to start later. Once everyone got there and ate, we did yoga in the last bit of the afternoon sunlight. I set up my tent and hosted the first hangout in the Mcmansion. We crammed 7 people in there, hung out for a while, and then all eventually went to bed after hiker midnight.
